To frame or not to frame-that is the question.
You say tomato, I say tomato-whether to frame artwork or not, is an individual preference. Some pieces seem to need to live beyond the boundaries of the canvas, while others are enhanced when framed. But framing can be a daunting prospect, financially and aesthetically. A long time fan of repurposed items and thrift store bargains, I collect some art I find in second hand stores simply for the frames!
Last month, me and my cousin Donna gathered 50+ such frames of all sizes, that I will use for art I'll create this Spring and Summer. Typically the painting comes first and then after, the choice of frame is considered. I've always been a little backwards . . .so, with all these great frames available, I've been painting to suit the frame, reversing the process.
Each of these paintings was created for the specific frame.
And this frame, for example, a glorious plaster piece from the 20's, measuring 24" x 30" inches on the inset, was a giant bargain for just $30. Yes, it's got a few nicks and is missing a bit of plaster in small areas, but hey, it's still an amazing find.
I can't wait to paint the countryside landscape that will find a home in this beautiful old lady.
