Enjoyable Art Show Reception at

Delaware Valley Arts Alliance, Narrowsburg NY

"The arrangements do not mimic the art, but the floral designers use the palette and theme of the art as a basis of their floral composition, " curator, Jane Luchsinger says.

The interplay between the floral arrangements and its partnered artwork creates a lively and living conversation about the shared artistic vision and the crafted intent of both mediums.

The Expression of Human Emotions

Leonardo Da Vinci wrote, “Try to be a calm spectator of how people laugh and weep, hate and love, blanch from horror and cry out in pain; look, learn, investigate, observe, in order that thou mayst come to know the expression of all human emotions.”

It's Spring cleaning time. I've done the closets and cabinets, now it's time to address my desk area. It is amazing what you find when you clean off your computer's flash drives! These "long lost" images are among a group of photographs that I shot four years ago near my home in Callicoon, NY, in Sullivan County, NY. I found them just in time to start a new series of paintings!

Summers are peaceful, lush and green there, and the skies, endless pools of blue heaven.

Twenty minutes West of Monticello, NY, Callicoon, is a hamlet bordering Pennsylvania and the Delaware River.

There is no better way to unwind than to take a walk, a drive along country roads, or by dipping a toe into the cool river. Nor, is there a better inspiration for creating countryside paintings than the Catskills in New York State!

My next series of paintings will pay homage to the Catskill Mountain Region of Sullivan County NY.

I invite you to join me on my journey and to follow this Blog to keep updated-just click the FOLLOW LINK to the right!

Happy Trails!

Pending Parrot Painting Progress

lisa-locurto.artistwebsites.com

I've never painted a bird before. I decided to do a trial run before embarking on the actual portrait of Jingles, so that I could learn the anatomy, proportion, and feathers of a parrot.  There are a lot of different kinds of parrots. Mrs. Jingles told me that Jingles is a Quaker Parrot, like this one named Bugsy:

I Googled Quaker Parrots and found that although their feather colors are typically similar, each parrot is distinct in their looks. They are delicate, complex creatures, and their feathers and feet are fascinating to me.  I know this may sound silly, but I never seem to see anything until I really have a close look at it. I mean, when you are drawing and painting something that is to resemble something, you really have to understand the structure and detail of the thing you are working with.

Truth be told, in past, birds sort of creeped me out. Animals without "arms", like snakes and birds had that effect on me. But now that I've been looking closely at Quakers, the unrest I had with armless animals has winged into a fanatical feathered fascination.

I decided that their feet are really their hands, and if birds could play instruments, other than knocking their beaks into bells, they would be concert pianists. They have long, slender toes/fingers, and are adept at using them for all sorts of purposes.

In honesty, I think it comes down to envy on my part. Would I give up either my toes or fingers for a pair of wings and the ability to fly?

Hmmmmm, I wonder.

Anyway, here are a few images of the beginning of my process and the progress I've made in parrot-ville so far.

Pet Portraits

Meet my newest client, Jingles the Parrot!

As an artist who paints custom portraits, I am often asked to paint pet pictures. Typically I'm approached to paint felines and canines, but most recently, I was commissioned to paint my first parrot! I've yet to meet Jingles, but I hear from her mom that she is a darling creature with expressive, warm, brown eyes. I want to meet Jingles and hope she'll sit on my head. (I said SIT, not SH#T.) I want to have a conversation with her and get to know her personality, because the key to creating a successful portrait is communicating personality. This is true for all creatures, two legged, four legged, and now, winged.

Jingles mom sent me these two photographs. The bird looks different in each one.

I combined them and came up with this draft doodle, which according to Mrs. Jingles is a reasonable likeness.

But, you see, it is no more than a profile picture of any old parrot. So, me and Jingles have a date to meet and get to know one another a bit before her portrait takes wing. I expect we'll sharpen our beaks and shoot the breeze, ruffle our feathers a little bit, and repeat the phrase, "Lisa wants a cracker."

I'll keep you posted about our date and progress on the painting!
